Shoe Box Gifts for Soldier's Children
The shoe box gifts for Soldier's Children was inspired by “Operation Christmas Child,” a project of Samaritan’s Purse, the international Christian relief organization led by Franklin Graham. I thought it was a great program which could be modified to help Logan County school children show their thanks to a soldier's child for their family's service. Working through the superintendents offices a letter was sent to all the schools asking for their help. In 2006 over 150 shoe boxes were given from Adairville, Auburn, Chandlers, and Olmstead with Lewisburg topping the list filling up 67 shoeboxes. Since then the shoe boxes continued to grow even more. In 2007 Adairville Elementary decided to give individual gifts to the soldier's children which was approximately 350 gifts. An amazing and outstanding show of love and support from those children. I think this is a wonderful way for our children to show their patriotism.
Banner Over Iraq Each fall I take personal pride and responsibility for 'The Banner' for the troops in Iraq. Over 700
greetings are hand written to the troops each year. The Banner is signed by men, women, and children, veterans, business owners and elected officials, both Democrat and Republican. From the average citizen to the Former First Lady and United States Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton and President Bill Clinton. The messages all show the local, state, and national level of support, appreciation and love for our military heroes and their sacrifice to keep us all safe.
